Moderators: Larry Ambs, Katherine Campbell

Details

PURPOSE:

In the last 20 years, archeologists have made significant gains in understanding the Khmer Empire and the history of Cambodia. We will use these studies to learn about the history of Angkor and the people of Cambodia.

DESCRIPTION:

Angkor is one of the greatest temples of the world in a country, Cambodia, that has had a conflicted history. Angkor is their heritage. In the tenth to fifteenth centuries, Angkor was the center of a kingdom that dominated the political, cultural, and economic world of Southeast Asia. The surrounding city housed over a million people. With recent archaeological tools we are now beginning to better understand its design, economics, and governance. In this seminar we will explore this formative period in the history of Cambodia as well as its geographical, cultural, and historical context.

ROLE OF PARTICIPANTS: Each participant will select a topic related to Cambodia or the Khmer empire to report on. The moderators will supply a suggested list of topics after the preview, but participants may select another topic with the approval of the moderators.
RESOURCES:

It is strongly recommended that all participants read Coe, M. and Evans, D., Angkor and the Khmer Civilization (Thames & Hudson, 2024) which contains recent archaeological results for Cambodia and the Khmer Empire.

ABOUT THE MODERATOR: Both Larry and Kathy have a long history of offering FCLIR seminars on a variety of topics.
