Literary Hoaxes and Forgeries

Deceiving readers through the ages

Moderator: Bonnie Vigeland

Details

PURPOSE:

The purpose of this seminar is to explore the vast number of literary forgeries: who wrote the forgery; what motivated the forger; and who discovered the hoax?

DESCRIPTION:

We will look at forgeries over the centuries, both famous and obscure, from Herodotus (Plato called him the Father of Lies) to Hitler’s (nonexistent) diaries—mostly for our amusement, but maybe also for our edification. Could we spot a forgery of a favorite author or even a fraudulent article?

ROLE OF PARTICIPANTS: We will begin with the recent film, “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” about the forger Lee Israel. Then participants will choose an author (the subject of the forgery) or a forger, and present a 30-40-minute presentation on him (most are men!) or her.
RESOURCES:

Background reading and research sources will depend on the topic chosen. There are a lot of resources online and in print. You can talk to the moderator about available resources.

ABOUT THE MODERATOR: Retired humanities librarian fascinated by this topic.
