From the Roman Republic to the Empire

Moderators: Jim Harvey, Janet Nichols

Details

PURPOSE:

The purpose of the seminar is to gain appreciation for the accomplishments of the great Roman Republic and its relevance today.

DESCRIPTION:

Rome dominated the Mediterranean world culturally and militarily for hundreds of years. Even today we are under the influence of Rome, since our alphabet, our calendar, and our form of government all had their roots in the Roman world. We will also examine the creation of the Republic and its transition to Empire.

Interesting presentation topics can range from engineering feats such as aqueducts to the daily life of Romans.

ROLE OF PARTICIPANTS: Participants will be expected to give a short (30 minutes) presentation on some aspect of Roman history, culture, or life and lead the ensuing discussion. They will also be asked to read a book (TBD) on Roman life and history and participate in the weekly discussion.
RESOURCES:

Resources, including a list of suggested books, will be provided by the moderators.
