Unsung Heroines Of The Civil Rights Movement

DESCRIPTION:

The role of women in the struggle for civil rights is often unknown or forgotten. This course will examine the reasons why women have been overlooked and will focus on women who played significant roles.

ROLE OF PARTICIPANTS: Participants will consider women’s roles in the civil rights movement, why those women are less well known, their individual contributions, and other related issues. Participants may choose to give a presentation, lead a discussion, show a film, or make another contribution.
RESOURCES:

A list of possible topics and readings will be posted by the moderators.  However, participants are free to choose their own topics or materials.  One particularly useful source is: Olson, Lynn, Freedom’s Daughters: the Unsung Heroines of the Civil Rights Movement from 1830 to 1970, Scribner, 2005.

ABOUT THE MODERATOR: Diane Liebert has been an FCLIR member for over 20 years; she has been an active participant in many seminars and led two. She has an MA in History and a PhD in Educational Research. This is Jodi Rafkin’s 2nd year as an FCLIR member, and her first time moderating. She moved to Northampton in 2024. Jodi practiced law for 23 years, then shifted to working in higher education.
