Poetry Out Loud

Being In Poetry's Embrace

Moderator: Cat Batson

Details

DESCRIPTION:

If you love poems, hearing and speaking them with other poetry lovers is a fine way to spend a couple of hours on an autumn day. Each week, one participant will lead the first fifty minutes, bringing copies of four to six poems on his or her chosen theme to be read aloud and discussed by all. After a short break, we’ll then go to a “potluck session,” with all participants bringing copies of one or two poems to share with the group.

Themes and poets will be chosen by participants before the semester begins so you have time to choose your poems. Recent themes have included love, joy, grief and mortality, America, children, family, work, and betrayal. Poets may be contemporary or from earlier periods (such as the ancient world).

ROLE OF PARTICIPANTS: Each participant will take responsibility for the first fifty minutes of one week. You’ll bring enough copies of your chosen poems to share with the class. For the second half, all participants should bring copies of one or two poems to read and share.
RESOURCES:

There is no single text for this seminar. Your personal library and the web are good resources. Anthologies (for example., Roger Housden’s Ten Poems series) may be useful. Choose whatever strikes your fancy.

ABOUT THE MODERATOR: Cat Batson is a member of Writing to Remember (Blue) and read two of her stories at FCLIR’s Encore presentations. She also, sometimes and very quietly, writes poems.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Morning seminars run from 9:30 am – 11:30 am.
