This seminar will explore how the outdoor spaces surrounding humans, in any part of the world, were systematically altered over time. We will explore the work of individuals whose design of landscapes and/or gardens had significant effects on prevailing tastes. We will identify and describe each designer’s most significant and/or well-known projects.
The following questions will be addressed:
What were the designer’s influences? Did they break with the past in their design? What was the designer’s initial vision or motivation and what emotions were they hoping to evoke? How was the project initiated? What challenges were faced and overcome in the design’s creation? Was the designer’s vision modified and if so, why? Did the garden change over time and what factors forced the changes? If the landscape or garden still exists, what challenges is it facing from climate change or other factors?
The purpose of the seminar is to learn about the individuals whose work transformed the grounds around civic buildings, private homes, and public parks. We will explore how a landscape or garden design was influenced by the times in which it was created.
