Confronting Artificial Intelligence

Moderator: Kevin Foley

Details

PURPOSE:

The purpose is to examine some of the many ways AI is transforming human life and to assess how AI might be controlled to benefit rather than harm humankind. We will also discuss what it means to be human.

DESCRIPTION:

Consideration will be given to the use of generative AI (ChatGPT and other large language models) as well as the deployment of varied forms of machine learning throughout economic and social activities. And the seminar will address the challenges inherent in developing regulatory schemes for AI as well as contemplating the potential for a super intelligence moving beyond human capability to control it.

Subject to participant input, approximately eight sessions will include one presentation by one or more participants on a selected topic area in the first hour with time for questions related to the specific topic.

The second half of each seminar session will include informed discussion by participants (prompted by a participant and/or the moderator) regarding the political, philosophical, moral, and other implications for humans as another intelligence grows around us.

ROLE OF PARTICIPANTS: Some participants will choose topics in concert with the moderator for a formal presentation to the group. Other participants may lead discussions about AI and being human. All are expected to be prepared for serious and lively engagement on each session’s topics.
RESOURCES:

The moderator will suggest reading, viewing, and listening materials when participants are enrolled in the seminar.

ABOUT THE MODERATOR: The moderator is not an AI expert. He moderated a similar seminar in spring 2023. His professional background includes public relations executive, communications consultant and editor of weekly newspapers.
