2026 Midterm Elections

Issues, Key Races and Implications for 2028

Moderator: Jay Russell

Details

DESCRIPTION:

Historically, the party of the incumbent president fares badly, sometimes disastrously so, in the midterm election in the president’s second term. Pundits often refer to this phenomenon as the “six-year itch.”

In four meetings before the election, this seminar, utilizing a roundtable discussion format, rather than traditional individual presentations by the members, will examine the mood of the voters, the salient issues, various state and local elections (including ballot questions), and toss- up House and Senate races. The week following the election, the seminar will focus on the results and their implications for 2028.

ROLE OF PARTICIPANTS: Participants should be prepared to discuss and share information and insights on each week’s scheduled topics, which the moderator will provide prior to the beginning of the seminar.
RESOURCES:

There are no required or recommended publications for this seminar, just an expectation that members, at a minimum, continue reading, listening to, or watching the sources they already rely on for political/election information and analysis.

ABOUT THE MODERATOR: Since 2016, Jay, who facilitates the Viewpoints interest group, has co-moderated or moderated six previous election seminars.
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:

Afternoon seminars meet from 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm.
