Seminar: 19th Century American Utopian Societies
During the 19th century, multiple new communities were founded in the US based on ideals of equality and education. New Harmony lasted only two years, and serves as a perfect example of how ideals collided with reality. The talk focuses on New Harmony’s founder, Robert Owen, a Scottish industrialist, who dedicated his life to finding lasting happiness through the “arrangement of society”.
