Catherine the Great of Russia (1729-96) was actually born in Germany, as was her husband, Peter. They had a loveless marriage which produced no children; both took numerous lovers. Peter was so inept that he was most likely assassinated, after which Catherine assumed the throne and ruled very well. She had a son Paul, who succeeded her and was also assassinated.
